1950 Oldsmobile Holiday Hardtop 455 Custom
1950 Oldsmobile Holiday Hardtop 455 Custom Miles: 2744 Stock #: CN10111 Engine: 455, .020 over Interior Color: Tan Vehicle Price: $89,900 Exterior Color: Prowler Orange Description Can a car be both subtle and over the top at the same time? Can you take an old car, slam it down on air ride, install a big inch mill, stitch up a custom cabin and still come off as understated? Looking at this custom '50 Olds Holiday 88, there's only one answer—yes! This Holiday starts with traditional old school body modifications, including a nosed and decked hood, shaved door handles and frenched headlights. After sanding and shaping the body to perfection, renowned builder Capaldi Enterprises sprayed on a gorgeous coat of ’03 Chrysler Prowler Orange by PPG, then added the almost-too-subtle yellow pearl ghost flames. The chrome and stainless trim that survived the chopping block was redone to a concours level. All hatches from the doors to the hood to the trunk open with the remote keyless entry units. The doors have solenoids to pop them open while the hood and trunk are opened by linear actuators—you just stand there and everything opens at your command! The trick electronics and a set of 17” Billet Specialties Chicayne wheels wrapped in 215/45 front and 275/40 rear Z rated tires certainly put the “future” in “Futuramic!” The 1949-52 Oldsmobile 88 is an American automotive icon. The car's 303 cubic inch “Rocket" engine was one of GM's first overhead valve, high-compression V8s (Cadillac had one in '49 as well), making the Olds one of the fastest cars of the day. The Olds was also the subject of what many consider to be the first rock-and-roll song, “Rocket 88," recorded by Jackie Brenston in 1951. Small wonder everyone wanted to “Make a Date with a Rocket 88" as the Oldsmobile ads of the day proclaimed. While the Holiday's original 303 cube, 135 horsepower V8 was the hot ticket back in 1950, a 1970 Olds 455 is far more suited to the car’s new attitude. Punched .060 over, filled with Weisco slugs, a Comp Cams bumpstick and ported stock heads with all the goodies in the valve train. Externally there’s a new 650CFM Edelbrock Thunder Series AVS carb on the Edelbrock Torker 455 manifold on the intake side and stock manifolds dumping into a custom 2.5” exhaust system with Flowmaster Hushpower mufflers. Classic Mondello cast valve covers and a very cool custom air cleaner get together with a chrome 100 amp alternator and other shiny stuff for the visuals. A fat factory radiator and a SPAL electric fan keeps things cool for the motor, a Vintage Air keeps things cool for the passengers and MSD electronics keep the motor hot. Power flows through a B&M 2500rpm stall converter to the B&M built TH400 auto…there’s more than enough power to get you anywhere you need to go, and do it in style! Like the low look, but still need to drive the car? Airbags are the only way to go, and the installed Air Ride Technologies’ Shockwave system is one of the finest systems on the market. Capaldi Enterprises fit a Fat Man Fabrications Mustang II front clip up front and a built Ford 9” rear stuffed with Moser axles and a factory traction lok out back. Disc brakes sit at all four corners while a Master Power booster and master cylinder combo lies under the driver’s feet in the stock location. A Rock Valley stainless fuel cell, Holley pump and Carter filter provide the fuel. The suspension and frame are painted in the same silver used in the engine compartment as an accent color…not that you’ll see anything with the car 3” off the ground! The interior is more than a match for the exterior in both number of toys and in fit and finish. Thunderbird Turbo Coupe seats, a custom console, the door panels, dash and headliner are all done up in ultra soft two tone oyster leather by the interior pros at Suburban Interiors here in northeast Ohio. Hit the right combo on the remote and the gold plated dash section drops down to reveal the ignition switch, A/C controls, headlight and wiper switches, controls for the air ride system and a couple Nordskog digital gauges for good measure. Flip open the front of the center console and find cup holders and a Sony remote mounted head unit to control the 6 disc Xplod changer in the trunk. Flip to the bottom of the console and find switches for the power windows and driver’s seat! This car doesn’t miss a beat! Gold accents also show up on the Grant wheel, the column shifter and the door panels, and the big center display is another Nordskog digital unit. The seats are some of the most comfortable we’ve sat in here—this is a cool way to go to a cruise! Big power, big style, over the top interior…and yet its Oldsmobile shines through. There’s more than $140,000 invested to get this car done as you see it so this isn’t some cheap date. Custom Rodder did a four page spread on it, and Summit made it a centerfold feature car—now it’s time to make it yours!
